In late 2014, I became a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. The following year, I attended my first SCBWI event, an illustration seminar entitled, The Hook of the Book, produced by the wonderful coordinators of the Michigan chapter. Incredibly, I won a 16-week mentorship with award-winning "artistrator," E. B. Lewis. (The potting shed, the little girl poking the "meremouse," the flying saucer/gas station, and the pirate ship were all homework assignments.)
The seminar compelled me to discard my first attempt at storytelling. (Dummy Book.) Afterward, I began to think about making a picture book based on the characters in the potting shed illustration. But the story kept growing in my mind. Now, it's become an MG trilogy called, The Seed. The first book, Of Ghosts and Gardens, is in manuscript form, and I am presently seeking representation.
